Treating Subungual Spurs & Nail Deformities

Targeted Treatment for Painful Bone Growths Beneath the Nail

A subungual exostosis is a bony growth that forms beneath the toenail, often triggered by trauma, irritation, or repeated pressure to the toe. As the bone enlarges, it can lift or deform the nail, cause pain with pressure, and even mimic the symptoms of an ingrown toenail. When painful or disruptive, surgical removal of the bone spur is the recommended treatment.

Other benign bone and cartilage tumors — including osteochondromas and enchondromas — can also form in the small bones beneath the toenail. These growths may distort the nail, cause chronic irritation, or weaken the bone itself. Although they are typically non-cancerous, they sometimes require surgical excision, with final diagnosis confirmed by a pathologist. Recurrence is possible in certain tumor types, and some hereditary conditions may increase the likelihood of multiple growths.

Our providers evaluate the cause of the nail deformity, discuss the safest and most effective treatment options, and offer expert surgical care when needed to relieve pain and restore normal nail appearance and function.
