Hallux Limitus

Hallux Limitus

Improving Motion. Reducing Pain.

Relief for Stiff, Painful Big Toe Joints

Hallux limitus is a condition where the big toe joint becomes stiff and loses normal motion — especially when weight-bearing during walking. As the condition progresses, the joint can develop degenerative arthritis, pain, and bone spurs. In advanced cases, motion becomes severely restricted, leading to hallux rigidus.

Diagnosis is based on a physical exam and imaging such as X-rays to evaluate joint alignment, bone spurs, and cartilage changes. Early signs may include pain during push-off, a callus under the big toe, or irritation from a bump on the top of the joint.

Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections, and custom orthotics that correct the underlying biomechanical problem. Orthotics help improve joint function and slow progression, while persistent or severe cases may require surgical intervention to remove bone spurs, restore motion, or replace the joint.
